How many weeks are in summer?

There are 13 weeks in summer. In the Northern hemisphere, astronomical summer starts with the summer solstice, which can fall on any day between 20th and the 22nd June depending on the year, and ends with the Autumn solstice, which can fall on any day between 21st and 23rd September. Summer 2024 starts on Thursday, 20th June and ends on Sunday, 22nd September.

In the Southern hemisphere, astronomical summer can start on any day between 20th and the 22nd December depending on the year, and can end on any day between 20th and the 22nd March.

The reason for this date variation in both hemispheres is due to Earth’s imperfect orbit around the sun.

Because the start date of the new season can land on different days each year, it makes yearly comparisons for weather statistics quite difficult. For this reason we also have meteorological summer.

Metrological summer

In the Northern hemisphere meteorological summer starts on the 1st of June each year and ends on the 31st August.

June has 30 days, July has 31 days, and August has 31 days. In total, that gives us 30 + 31 + 31 = 92 days. So, there are 92 days in meteorological summer.

To convert these days into weeks, we divide the total number of days by 7 (the number of days in a week):

92 days / 7 days/week = 13.14 weeks.

Rounded to the nearest whole number, that gives us approximately 13 weeks in summer.

In the Southern hemisphere meteorological summer starts on the 1st December and ends on the 28th February each year (29th of February if it’s a leap year!).

How long is summer break?

Summer break is a period of time during which students and teachers are on vacation from school or university. So, while summer lasts approximately 13 weeks, the big question on the lips of all teachers, students, and parents is how long is summer break!? The short answer is that this depends on where you are in the world.

The length of summer break can vary depending on the educational system and country. In general, duration of summer break can range from anywhere between one and a half months to three months depending upon what country you live in.

In many countries, especially in North America and Europe, summer break for primary and secondary schools typically lasts around two to three months. It often starts in late June or early July and extends until late August or early September.

Length of summer break in various countries

Here is a quick overview of different countries:

United States: Around 10 to 12 weeks, starting from late May to early June and ending in late August or early September.

Canada: Typically 8 to 10 weeks, starting in late June or early July and ending in late August or early September.

United Kingdom: Approximately 6 to 7 weeks, starting in late July or early August and ending in early to mid-September.

Australia: Around 6 to 7 weeks, starting in mid-December and extending to late January or early February.

France: Approximately 8 weeks, starting in early July and ending in late August.

Germany: Generally 6 weeks, starting in early to mid-July and ending in mid-August to early September depending on location. In Germany the 16 federal states work on a staggered schedule.

Japan: Roughly 6 weeks, starting in late July or early August and ending in late August or early September. Once again, each district determines its own summer break.

China: Typically 6 to 8 weeks. It usually begins in early July and ends in late August.

India: Typically 6 to 8 weeks, starting in April or May and ending in June or July.

South Africa: Usually 4 to 6 weeks, starting in early to mid-December and ending in mid-January or early February.

Brazil: About 2 to 3 months, starting in late December or early January and ending in late February or early March.

Chile: Generally for about 2 to 3 months. Known as “vacaciones de verano,” it usually starts in late December or early January and concludes in late February or early March.

It’s important to note that the length of summer break in each country can vary slightly depending on regional differences, local educational policies, and specific school schedules. So, please keep in mind that these durations are approximate.

Why it’s important for teachers to know

For teachers, being aware of the length of summer break is important for several reasons:

Lesson Planning

Knowing the duration of summer break allows teachers to plan their curriculum effectively. They can structure their lessons, units, and learning objectives to fit within the available teaching time before and after the break. This ensures that they can cover the necessary content and meet the learning goals for their students.

Vacation Planning

Understanding the length of summer break enables teachers to plan their vacations, visits to family and friends, or personal commitments during this period. It helps them plan any traveling, make arrangements, and ensure they have ample time for rest and rejuvenation before the next teaching term begins.

Scheduling and Availability

Summer break affects the availability of students and teachers alike. If you are an ESL teacher (English as a second language) or TEFL teacher (teaching English as a foreign language), summer break can represent an opportunity to acquire additional students who are looking for English tuition while they are not in school.

You may also want to take on one of the many summer jobs for teachers, so you’ll need to know how much time you have to dedicate to this.

Some teachers may have other professional commitments or opt for professional development opportunities during this time, while many students take vacations or attend summer camps.

Communication with Students and Parents

Being knowledgeable about the length of summer break allows teachers to communicate effectively with students and their parents or guardians. They can inform them in advance about the start and end dates of the summer break, any important dates or events during this period, and any specific instructions or materials for students to work on during their vacation.

So, keep in mind those summer dates and plan accordingly!
